Self Portrait of Marisa Silos

Photographic-Digital Paintings by Marisa Silos

At first glance one sees in these images a solitary figure, in some instances multiple figures, surrounded by an immense space carefully designed like a piece of architecture or a giant minimalist field painting. The figures seem small, lost, perhaps hiding in seductive harmonies of color and indiscernible shapes. They can be teasing, mysterious and erotic, not so much in the contemporary sense as in images reminiscent of Anais Nin. Then, one sees that the figure is central, the environment is actually emanating outward from the figure, and the figure becomes the source of power. This dichotomy creates a spiritual quality that broadens the mystery and beauty of this work.

On the surface these images conjure up painters like James Whistler who placed his figures in front of carefully constructed backgrounds: The prime example is Whistler's Mother, and on the more sensuous side, Symphony in White, the portrait of a young standing woman. The compositional angularity of Andrew Wyeth's paintings also influenced these compositions.

Marisa Silos studied photography at The San Francisco Art Institute under Pirkle Jones. She continued her studies at SCI-Arc, The Southern California Institute of Architecture. This body of work in its precision and refinement testifies to the influence of Michael Volk, Terry Surjan, and Rose Mendez-- her mentors at SCI-Arc.
